I'm Martha Warriner Jarrett, known to most as Martie, and right now, I am Blackboard Copy. I was born and raised in Pasadena, California, so I'm a native. I graduated from Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles in 1977. I spent the bulk of my legal career as a bankruptcy lawyer in Los Angeles and Riverside. I retired in 2014 and now I write full time. I've self-published my memoir, A Rough Season, and I'm working on a screenplay. This is my third career - advertising, law, and now copywriting/creative writing.
My husband Ronald and I moved to Bakersfield, California, where Ronald's daughter and her family live, in 2017. As someone who was born and raised in the LA Basin, Bakersfield was not exactly my dream place to retire, but I've been surprised. I actually like it here (except for the air quality). Although we could use some good shopping. And maybe a Cheesecake Factory (my favorite chain).
Now that I'm retired from the practice of law, I'm enjoying life and indulging in my passion for reading and writing. I've taken a lot of copywriting courses from AWAI (American Writers & Artists, Inc.) For me, copywriting combines the persuasive writing and research skills I learned as a lawyer with my love of creative writing (I've also written a memoir, two as yet unpublished novels and I'm working on a screenplay). Now, I'm using the skills I've acquired to help other professionals and small businesses. Give me a call and we can talk about your project.
